Murcia Airport
The airport is used by both civilian and military aircraft, and as a result is only available to civil flights after 15:00 on all weekdays. Weekends operate a normal full day.In late 2006 the modifications to the terminal were completed. The number of check in desks was doubled to 16 with a lot more space for queuing passengers. The security check area was moved and is now 10 times its original size. Except during the peak summer months the security queues are minimal. The departure lounge has been substantially enlarged and now has 5 gates, far more seating, a café, duty-free shop (not all that cheap - buy booze in the supermarket), additional and larger toilet facilities, and a couple of gift shops.
Land-side there is a self service café that opens during normal airport opening hours. Outside the terminal is a kiosk selling drinks and limited food, with adjacent tables and chairs for those wishing to give the tan a final top-up.
There are six different car hire firms with branches actually in the terminal building at Murcia Airport.
Flights to Murcia are available from nineteen different airports in the UK and through five different low cost airlines. The flying times for all flights to Murcia Airport from the UK is around 2 hours and 30 minutes. With the arrival of several low cost airlines such as BmiBaby, Jet2, Ryanair and Easyjet, Murcia Airport is becoming busier. You will also find a wider selection of flights and services 85kms away at Alicante Airport.
During the summer season Sterling Airlines will connect Murcia-San Javier Airport with Stockholm and Copenhagen. The flights to Stockholm will operate every Friday, while the routes to Copenhagen will be operate on Saturday.
In 2007 the passenger numbers at Murcia Airport climbed from 556.927 in 2003 to 1,995,162 and this is largely thanks to so many low cost airlines choosing Murcia San Javier as a destination. Over 20,000 flights were handled there last year, and It is also the closest airport to the popular and widely advertised Golf Development of Polaris World Spain.
There is also a lot of talk about a new airport for Murcia so we will have to wait and see what develops.
